Ah the fond memories of one of my kids shouting “I WANT REGULAR CHICKEN” at the table most nights.

We had no idea what “regular chicken” was.

e: I just asked said kid, who is much older now. “I don’t know lmao. I have no recollection of actually saying it, just you recounting it.”

had it just become an inside joke? would one of the other kids remember? like, i tend to ramble when i’m talking and lose my train of thought and go on tangents and shit. one time we were playing trivial pursuit as a family, and it was my turn to read the blue question. we were talking and laughing and forgetting to play the game, or at least i was, and then like the entire family in unison half-shouted “Cripple, blue!”

my mother said “Cripple blew!” at family dinner the other night after i tooted and it got a big laugh. it’s been like 30 years. i fully expect it to come up at my funeral.

Sometimes when kids talk, they will lose their train of thought, remember it partially, then continue. It creates new phrases that we never heard before even if they only interact with family.

They are like autocomplete but the first word got deleted and replaced by a word from a random word generator.

I am quite certain that “regular chicken” at the time had a specific meaning, because that phrase was used frequently for a time. Once, we guessed that it meant generic fronzen chicken nuggets. Nope. It might have been plain grilled chicken breast. As in “only chicken, cooked, nothing else. Regular.”

A parent ate it. They ate it because making a hot one for them later is probably better.
