  • Just pasting the relevant bit:

After putting the children on antiretroviral drugs early in their lives to control the virus, Goulder and his colleagues were keen to monitor their progress and adherence to standard antiretroviral treatment, which stops HIV from replicating. But over the following decade, something unusual happened. Five of the children stopped coming to the clinic to collect their drugs, and when the team eventually tracked them down many months later, they appeared to be in perfect health.

“Instead of their viral loads being through the roof, they were undetectable,” says Goulder. “And normally HIV rebounds within two or three weeks.”

  • The Trump administration has found itself caught between deflecting blame for the weak economic numbers and denying the numbers’ validity. In an interview with CNN this morning, Miran admitted that the new jobs report “isn’t ideal” but went on to attribute it to various “anomalous factors,” including data quirks and reduced immigration. (Someone should ask Miran why immigration is down.) And this afternoon, Trump posted a rant on Truth Social accusing the BLS commissioner of cooking the books to make him look bad. “I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY,” he wrote. “She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified.” He then went on to argue, not for the first time, that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell should be fired for hamstringing the economy with high interest rates. These defenses are, of course, mutually exclusive: If the bad numbers are fake, why should Trump be mad at Powell?

Trump’s people have no idea what they’re doing. Their only plan is to keep up the bullshit and deflection while they steal as much as they can before the country crashes. And then they’ll find ways to use the crash to make themselves richer too.

  • I’ve met quite a few aspiring managers for whom the goal of life is to have other people working for they and bringing in the money while they do as little work as possible. I once partnered with a guy on a small business, only to find out he was like this. He kept talking about how his goal was to hire the most junior developers and pay them as little as possible while he only worked 1 hour per week and got to spend time with his family. I’d argue with him that this was exploitation but he called it “working smart”. Then he swindled me out of $20,000, which I guess was also “working smart”, and we parted ways, leaving him richer and me poorer. Lots of people seem to have the weird idea that morals don’t apply to business.

I’m watching The Walking Dead right now and it’s largely about how living under constant threat and competition causes people to become brutal to one another, and some go completely off the rails and become exploitative and cruel, while others hold on to some kind of ethics even after they are forced to do brutal things. Capitalism does something similar to people. Some resist exploiting others, but many have such weak ethics that their instinct for self-preservation and self-advancement crushes the good out of them.
