Not for all countries, not for every site. People will find communities and content underground. It will be more dangerous than when everything is out in the open but users will find a way.

Anonymity online is going to die

At least that means sites won’t have the illusion of engagement when it’s actually just a flood of bots talking to each other, right?

    …Right?

Not if this goes accompanied with new laws that force consuming content or products from the favoured oligarchies.

After all, if they know what you are doing on the internet, they know you are not spending your money on the stuff they want. And once they can control that, it’s over.

I can’t speak for others, but I’m using the internet less and less. Lemmy is basically my last stop off the train.

I remember a time when a lot of Conservatives refused to participate in the census, due to a rock-solid insistence that the government had no right to even ask if they’d be willing to volunteer their personal information…and would probably threaten to shoot you, if you implied that it was mandatory.

Now, they want everyone online to upload their photo ID? What the fuck happened, man? How did we get from there, to here?

They are the party of “do as I say, not as I do.” Total control freaks, the lot of them. That’s why they refused to give up their info, but are just fine making everyone else do so.

The infrastructure of surveillance has been deployed.

Now they are just trying to figure the legal framework to get the peasants to accept it.

This is getting rammed into everyones assholes one way or another.

Still got to fight the good fight but we are about a well done frog here tbh.

Owner class is just dotting their Is and crossing their TS here.

We are trapped by legalism and those who will stand back and do nothing if we act against our masters, claiming their aggression is just because we didn’t obey the rules they set out to oppress us.

I reckon it’s been dead for a while, they’re just making it all official. We’ve known since 2013 that the US had “TIA” or total informational awareness, aka access to anything and everyone, anywhere. And that was over a decade ago.
