I was out of work for over a year and jobs have been coming in again since two months. The many indications that this unholy shit bubble is finally bursting has me smiling, dancing and singing “The robot is dead, the robot is dead!”. I hate the AI hype with a passion, not just because of my work, but because of the ghastly slop we’re being exposed to everywhere online. I hope it disappears quickly into the same hole NFTs when to fuck off into.
Now before the billionaires come up with the next stupid hype can we at least eat a few of them?
Investors have created their own little Keynesian stimulus package by dumping money into AI. It’s the only reason the US economy hasn’t been contracting the last few months.
When this bubble pops, it’s going to hurt. Bad. But it has to pop, and the sooner it happens, the better.
I pray to the gods that you are right and for your wishes of a hearty meal to be fulfilled
I’ve been looking for work for over two years
I hope so too but then I see stuff like this:
AI is not going anywhere. Fucking delusion this post is.
Sure it is. Self-hosted models aren’t going to be a mass market technology any more than self-hosted Jellyfin servers are. The investment is all in big datacenters, and after three years of LLM hype, nobody has figured out how to make revenue that comes close to matching their investment. We’re literally seeing $100B/year investment for returns of $10M over the same year.
You sound like the same people who said we’ll all get left behind if we don’t use NFTs.
Good. While machine learning has many valid and useful applications, it’s high time we popped the LLM
pimplebubble.GPT5 may be the breaking point.
A mind boggling amount of resource expensed by the, as investors could see, the best of the best. To result in what is at best a mild incremental improvement after a two year wait…
Throwing more datacenters at the market won’t produce returns. There is potential in improved integrations and maybe research seeking a novel approach, but not capacity. Training switches from aiming for expanded capability to refreshing currency.
The thing that really pisses me off sometimes is that even if this current “AI” shit somehow morphs into something resembling true AGI and is able to take over a whole lot of jobs, that’s not a good thing! That’s not something anybody should want at all. It means flooding the job market with a whole lot of folk, with skills that are no longer valid (since the AI can do it). Maybe some people keep their jobs and are more of a supervisor kind of thing to the AI or can work alongside the AI somehow, but a big number of people simply won’t have jobs anymore and can’t be easily employed again. We currently have no social structures in place to deal with this situation, it would be absolutely terrible. Furthermore as the AI thing can work 24/7 with no breaks, no vacation, no sickness and only requires energy, the value of the work being done goes down by a lot. So even the people that are still employed would need to compete and wages would inevitably drop. Do we honestly expect all the CEOs, owners and other rich folk to suddenly have a change of heart and start sharing their wealth? Not very likely I think. All that money they intend to make they will keep for themselves. They pay millions for accountants, tax specialists and lawyers, in order to not pay any taxes. They hate poor people, they hate social systems, they just want all the money for themselves. But even they will in the end be betrayed, since with the job market crashing, the economy will also crash. It doesn’t matter how cheap you can produce the products with AI, if there isn’t anyone with money to buy shit.
Now personally I don’t think the current AI shit can do those things. It’s all marketing hype and a big inflated bubble which will pop in the next few years. LLMs are deeply flawed and can never become anything resembling AGI. But like, why are we even trying. It’s Pandora’s box and we need to keep a lid on it. Our current world is ruled by capitalism and that won’t do well if labour is suddenly basically free.
I just can’t help but think to myself: “Humans need not apply”
People losing jobs to automation should be a good thing. It should be a sign of progress and healthy advancement towards better living conditions and longer happier lives. It should be a good thing.
We should also have UBI and Healthcare.
Should be.
But literally never has.
Is bests should every time.
Idk, manually hand carving letters for printing presses, people aligning every word, every space, every sentence on the press to print a single page don’t seem like good jobs to me.
They are better jobs than not having a job at all and living in culverts. Or, you know, dying of starvation.
See, that’s the problem when all these geniuses “disrupt” things. They tout all the great things that could be accomplished but forget about the people already here.
Ask anybody who was doing that thing for presses you imagined if they’d prefer that job to starvation.
In my country I can survive without a job no problem. It’s not a good life, but it would be possible to live a whole life without ever working.
I don’t know if any person in my country died of starvation in the last 50 years. That’s definitely a third world country’s problem.
It all depends on the pay.
they probably realized around '22-23 that AI was costing them too much money, and investors will be asking for returns very soon, so they started the massive layoffs as a result.
There is something that makes me feel uneasy when I think that ideas, understanding and creativity can be automatically generated by an unconscious system.
Except none of it can by any system that is available now nor any system that is even on the charts for being plausibly available within the lifetime of anybody currently born.
“We” aren’t trying. It’s the rich ignorant assholes you’ve already characterized properly who are trying.
I meant “We” as in humanity in general. I agree it’s the rich assholes that are a lot of the drive behind this. But I’ve also seen this kind of research being done for the sake of research, in universities for example.
And that news is? Is futurism.com giving you a cut of their ad revenue op?
Now, however, Wall Street appears to be yanking its money out of one of the largest datacenter providers in the game, possibly an early indicator that reality could be finally catching up to the massively hype-dependent AI industry.
Headline is overblown, but there it is, second paragraph.
It sometimes feels like denial in here.
CRWV has been an options play in Wallstreetbets for a few weeks. CoreWeave doesn’t make AI; they sell overpriced hardware and cloud services.
It was heavily shorted (because it’s dumb) and people were buying options anticipating a short squeeze. Hasn’t happened. They’ve moved on. More than a handful of these people don’t give any consideration at all to profitability.
Yay :33333333333333333333333333333333333
Wall Street catching up on a little common sense, it seems.
I’ve never seen it more illogical overall. Broken clock…
