  • Something like Lemmy could form a pretty good foundation. Onion routing already has created a “parallel internet” that depends 0% on DNS, and Lemmy instances would federate today (with whitelisted federation) via /etc/hosts with no DNS involved. It wouldn’t work well, it would have problems, but if someone actually tried to make it work moderately well, the whole model of “admins running servers which it’s your problem to get connected to, and then they know how to federate to each other because all the admins talk with each other” could work itself around over time into something that actually had some pretty strong robustness to it.

There are other attempts (Holepunch, Freenet, all that jazz), but actually Tor and Fedi things probably have the best claims to being able to turn into something realistic that didn’t need DNS, over time. You just couldn’t talk to it until you set your machine up to be able to get the initial connection going, but that’s not fatal, the whole internet used to be a lot like that way back when.

  • Dude you’re on the instance where it is forbidden in worldnews to say “Fuck (a particular country which will remain nameless)”.

Literally the only one. You can say “Fuck the United States” or “Fuck Israel” everywhere on Lemmy, or near enough, which of course is as it should be. But if I start stepping on the wrong massive state actors’ toes from one particular instance…

  • Seriously. The reason CSAM merchants and drug dealers use Tor is because it actually protects their privacy successfully. Whereas, if you’re using a VPN or whatever cobbled-together solution, the feds just have a hearty laugh about it, send a subpoena by email or use some automated system that’s even more streamlined, and then come and find you.

Tor is not bulletproof; they regularly run operations where they take down some big illegal thing on the dark web. But they have to do an operation for it, and if there were any solution that was any better, that thing would be even more infested with illegal material than “the dark web” is. That’s just how it works. And listening to the newspapers when they tell you that it’s a sign you need to stay away from those actually-effective solutions because “terrorism!” or whatever is a pretty foolish idea.

  • Tor is slow and has a reputation of being used by pedophiles and drug traffickers. I2P is scattered in implementation and cannot handle high load.

Physical bluetooth mesh networks or other technology is an example. Maybe even a new version of dial-up.

    These are incompatible statements lol

Tor is fine, I’m looking at this on Tor Browser right now. I would say the jank level is about 20%. Quokk.au, actually, for some weird reason has significant problems with it (significant slowness and sometimes refuses to load a page). I actually have no idea what’s going on with that, but it and I think one other site are the only Fedi sites that have any kind of problem at all. The majority (but not all) news sites and things work fine. Some things do not and I have to bounce over to some normal browser. The jank level is definitely not 0, but it’s bearable.

I actually do agree about needing to set up a better architecture overall. Tor is an extremely special-purpose architecture for one thing only (near-bulletproof privacy and firewall traversal even against extremely aggressive government attempts to defeat both), which is honestly a pretty fantastic start, but there’s a lot more that goes into “the internet” than just slapping a slightly janky but super-safe VPN over the front of it.

The main point is: Hey! Don’t badmouth Tor, it’s good (and the jank level of starting from scratch instead will be super high for any forseeable future.)

  • Okay, here’s the answer: Just do an occupation of the whole region like Germany after WW2. Israel and Palestine both.

Have interviews with each and every person. Give them a choice: We’re going to have peace. We’ll set the boundaries, we’ll run the civilian police for a little while, nobody shoots anyone, nobody takes anyone’s land. The boundaries might not be fair, you might or might not agree, but that’s what we’re doing. Are you cool with that? Or do you feel like you want to fight for something better than that, for your people?

Anyone that says “cool” gets to live in the currently Israel part. Anyone that says “fight for my people” gets to live in the currently Palestine part, with all the apartheid infrastructure that the Israelis already set up for them. They’re probably not going to like it. Well, you said you wanted to fight, now we’re fighting, stay in your box, we’ll have some patrols with some trigger happy soldiers. You can fight them, if you want. Anyone in the Israel part who also happens to be Israeli and falls back into some old habits gets to deal with UN sanctioned MPs with the little blue helmets, maybe with the US military if they get extremely excited. And then they go in the box.

Netanyahu and all the IDF leadership and anyone who seems appropriate goes to the ICC, just drop them off at the door in cuffs and let them sort it out what they want to do with him.

I mean, as long as I’m dreaming, I’d like a Caribbean vacation, too. But if you ask me what a solution looks like, that’s the best I can come up with. Maybe let that go for five years or so, and then go into the box again and poll the people: Hey, ready for peace? It’s ready for you, if you want it, if not then we’ll be back in a few years to check again. Let us know.

Just elaborate fantasies to distract me while everyone is dying, along with their families

  • In general, one of the secrets about LLMs is that the intelligence they’re displaying is largely in the mind of the person interacting with it and the person watching and interpreting. If you ever watch one of them “on its own” trying to reason its way through a problem without help, it becomes painfully clear.

In this case, there is no intelligence in the source material for them to fall back on, so they don’t have the cheat available. It’s actually a really instructive demo.

  • Copilot is awful. Pretty much all the ones that operate by that model of “continuously sending pings to the server for various random requests and helpful hints” are pretty much guaranteed to be garbage, because the economics don’t work unless they pare down the resources devoted to it until it’s dumb as a post.

(Well, the economics still don’t work even then, but they’re hemorrhaging money at a little bit slower rate if they make it stupid)

Copying and pasting code to Claude, I’ve found to work decently well if you structure it so you can keep your focus and not put Claude in a position to fail too badly by taking on too large of a task. I know Anthropic has a code assistant that works on some kind of slightly different paradigm, so maybe that one is decent, I don’t know. But yeah Copilot will never accomplish much of anything helpful beyond auto-completing some statements every now and then.

  • You fucking morons

This is never going to die, is it

For the uninitiated: MTG’s amendment left intact the funding for offensive weapons, but cut the funding for defensive weapons for Israel. So there is literally no way AOC could win. Leaving aside the fact that it was a kooky MTG amendment that was never going to pass in the first place… If she voted for the amendment, then everyone who is currently screaming that she’s a fake leftist who supports genocide could say “See? SHE VOTED FOR KEEPING ISRAEL’S FUNDING INTACT, SHE SUPPORTS GENOCIDE!” Since she voted against it, they are currently screaming “See? SHE VOTED AGAINST DEFUNDING ISRAEL, SHE SUPPORTS GENOCIDE!”

    It’s just more can’t-win, let’s-eat-the-leftest-person-because-we’re-super-leftist-I-promise horseshit.

  • Well, I wasn’t the one who said it was easy (and IDK that digging through the modlog is the easiest way even for someone who is sure that it happened to find out when it did), but sure. Here are all the posts from Dec 2023 and Jan 2024 that were removed that had “poll” in the title:

I was assured there would be some that showed Biden behind in the polls, that the mods were trying to cover up…

It’s a silly thing to get hung up on, but it helps to demonstrate that the person I’m talking with is talking about some situation that didn’t happen in reality.
