Nobody can realistically challenge YT on being a “post all the videos here”, which is why we could have “specialist” video sites again, with less content but where you know what you’re getting. Post something on YT, tell people to watch on the main site for the full experience without cut content and all the music that would get instant DMCA strike. It’s not like you can get “the full experience” on YT anyway, they shadowban and demonetize lots of stuff

yeah this is something i’ve been struggling with pertaining to my channel. aside from having all my eggs in the yt basket, i would like to offer my viewers an ad-free experience. as the nature of my channel is 8-10 90-minute videos a week (live music performances from various artists), there’s no one else ready to host so much video for a reasonable price, let alone for free. id love to be on peertube, but i’d have to run my own instance to hog up that much of the storage.

You could make a room in Keet, put your videos there and invite your followers in? No server costs or file size limits since it’s peer to peer. I’m in several rooms with video files of 1-2g, works great.

What about Odysee? I don’t frequent it too much these days but it seemed like a good alternative a few years ago.

A number of big names are there, like Louis Rossman, SomeOrdinaryGamers and Mental Outlaw are there, though I don’t know how Odysee reacts to reports, fuck bombs that would make AVGN blush and legal complaints. I don’t think any of their videos is “odysee exclusive” or has exclusive content, so their viewcount is super low on every video, less than 1k

The place seems to have enough variety of content to no longer look like a far-right/crypto controlled place, at least.

Honestly the DMCA strikes are probably way better on YouTube than the alternative of getting hit with lawsuits and cease and desists on a specialist site. The amount of things that are considered normal now on YouTube that were just straight up considered copyright infringement prior to YouTube getting massive is wild for anyone who was in media and used to having to get clearances and pay royalties for anything that wasn’t public domain. Those expectations haven’t changed, and the laws haven’t either, it’s just YouTube has done a lot to normalize things, and license things for the whole platform where they can, because they know it helps keep the site alive. But if you aren’t under the protection of the platform and their agreements, the consequences can get way worse.

Well sure, and we have that with things like Nebula and Pornhub. But even on their very best days, neither of them are really competing with youtube, they’re not vying for the same niche.
