01: A girl labeled ‘Artists’ is holding a drawing tablet and pen under her arm. She is wearing round glasses and a blue sweatshirt. She has messy dark-brown hair and a brown skin-tone. She says “We don’t really wanna MAKE A.I. art.”
02: A guy labeled ‘Art Enjoyers’ holds his hand out while speaking. She is wearing a purple and yellow hawaiian shirt with a floral pattern over a white t-shirt, and has red hair and a light skin-tone. He says “We don’t really wanna SEE A.I. art.”
03: Behind them both, there is a cute girl in a business suit with a pink tie. She is blushing a bit and has pink eyeshadow, and looks upset. Her messy shoulder-length hair is parted in the middle, and held by two hairclips: one that looks like a red arrow pointing down, and one that looks like a green arrow pointing up. She says “Um … I-Isn’t there someone you forgot to ask?” She is labeled ‘Shareholders’.
04: She puffs up her cheeks and pouts, a tear is on the verge of falling from one of her eyes. ‘Artist Enjoyers’ Guy is now in front of her yelling “AH!! SHAREHOLDERS-CHAN!!” while ‘Artists’ Girl is in front of her yelling “WE’RE SORRY WE HURT YOU!!!”
It is not so much the “I want to use it as a toy regardless of the environmental consequences” crowd like you that is the main problem. That would be the “I want to use it to create profit regardless of the environmental and artistic consequences” which is the main problem. They will eventually completely replace actual art, because it profits them and they have no limits to how much slop they can produce.
I find all digital art to be basically worthless, but at least the artists have a point of view or something to say. AI cannot do that. It can attempt to generate similar styles, but without anything to say, the “art” is just slop.
This is why I meet artists, and buy their works physically. Tangible work, mistakes and all, like pen and paper, or sculpture or jewelry etc. But I get that is just personal preference.
Eventually (and in some cases already) digital artists will just incorporate AI into their tool set, just like they did with shaders, and paths, and filters and all the other digital tools. At that point is it really AI art, or is it simply algorithm assisted? The works have something to say, the tool just made it easier to do so. We all know there is no such thing as AI, its just noise to image math formulas, the direction has to come from somewhere.
What is art is always in question: look at the giant hotel and mass produced art factories. Is it still art, even when humans made it, or is just a factory on production mode?
I really wish the corporations would shut the fuck up and quit pushing “AI” that is not AI though.
I thought about this for a while and I’m not convinced.
Either AI makes slop, the “ART” is soulless, misses that creative spark we humans have and is more like in imitation of art than actual art.
In that case it will not replace human artists.
The other case is it will make thought provoking works, things that evoke real emotions and has the ability to help humanity forward. In that case I don’t really care the art is not made by humans.
But so far I’m not convinced AI (LLMs) can do this. If at some point AI makes all the art and humans stop making art. The AI doesn’t get any new training data, so it would only improve by actuall creativity and coming up with things never done before. The current state of AI feels a lot more like mixing what it knows.
