A long-winded XLibre ad, essentially
Holy AI slop this article sucks. Nothing screams ChatGPT more than a shitton bullet points in the form:
- Keywords: A sentence to describe the keywords.
Also, Wayland is gay and X11 is trans.
Oh, not this again! Move on with the times!
Use Wayland!
I see the point and I find the article honest in exposing its authors views.
But honestly Wayland is better than X in most ways and while it’s taking time to grow and replace X fully, well, on 10 years from now X will be rightfully forgotten.
This is not a systemd/sysinit issue. Wayland actually fix issues, deep issues, in an old outdated and broken also mostly unmaintained stack of tech that didn’t age well.
I did not yet switched to Wayland everywhere for various reasons, but the fact that where I did it worked very well and didn’t even noticed the transition is proof that Wayland is the wayforward.
Fegmentation is bad? Well, it’s the core of Linux, so get used to it and let everybody pick what they prefer…
To be fair, systemd also fixed a bunch of issues (by making the boot sequence declarative and also consolidating a bunch of previously disparate services into a cohesive ecosystem); it also introduced new ones which are now difficult to fix due to compatibility. I still prefer it.
Upfront they describe two monocultures and then a thriving diverse ecosystem and then conclude that the thriving diverse ecosystem is the unsustainable option.
Yeah, Linux as a software ecosystem is complex and messy like a forest or the animal kingdom. It’s a feature.
Two of the things in their list of “Hardware and Driver Issues” look way false from my experience.
Nvidia compatibility had been getting steadily worse on x.org for the four or five years prior to the switch to wayland. It is getting steadily better on wayland now and I would pick wayland from a stability point of view right now.
Multi GPU setups are night and day so much better on wayland. I look after a few different wacky multi monitor setups and the support for them is so much better on wayland, particularly 7+ monitors across multiple different physical GPUs, mismatched refresh rates, mismatched sizes, weirdo physical layouts and monitors that are being turned on and off during a session work considerably better.
This is 💩
I’m going to promote it even harder!
Please don’t promote Red Cap politics disguised as software.
This whole document is a bunch of outdated information, misinformation and manipulation.
The XLibre project continues this legacy with active community development.
This particular part shows the real reason why it was written. Go promote your Nazi-maintained nonsense somewhere else.
